Mavuso was not feeling well and was admitted to a hospital on Monday. He succumbed to his illness on Tuesday morning.
The African National Congress (ANC) in KwaZulu-Natal on Tuesday said it “received the sad news of the untimely departure of a renowned SABC Radio Current Affairs Newscaster and a creative talent Bongani Mavuso”.
The ANC added: “We can only imagine the pain that the entire family is experiencing at a loss so great that no man can heal.
“What saddens us most is that his departure is a depletion of a solid and clear pool of journalists available to the nation.
“This is a man who has been an invaluable asset not only to the people of KwaZulu-Natal but to the whole country and Africans in the Diaspora.”
The ANC said uDonga LwaMavuso, as he was affectionately known, was a remarkable person who throughout his professional life excelled in a variety of careers in broadcasting as a presenter, producer, MC, writer, and an award-winning poet.
“As we mourn with a deep sense of sadness the passing of this son of the soil, we say his untimely death is not in vain,” said the ANC.
“Many aspiring broadcasters have been inspired by his dedication and his professionalism throughout his career.
“We call upon the people of KwaZulu-Natal, leaders of faith – neighbors and friends to pray and support the family during this period.
