Former Skeem Saam actress Makgofe Moagi begs those who come to the river to pray and perform rituals not to contaminate them.

She said, whenever people go to communicate with their ancestors, they have to take whatever they bring with them and throw it in the trash because the river is very sacred.

In a video shared on social media, Makgofe, who is famous for his role as Charity on SABC1, says that people are sabotaging themselves.

“I humble myself, I don’t fight. I just wanted to ask. Who came up with this idea that when we cross the river we leave everything we brought there? We left bottles and plastic and everything.

We spoil everything for ourselves. Tomorrow when they say we shouldn’t go to the river because it’s polluted, it will be on us,” she said.

Makgofe, also a Sangoma, said she was taught to clean up after going to the river, so she preached the same.

“I’ve been taught that when you get to a river, you take all your stuff, find the nearest trash can, and throw away the stuff you’re using. You don’t leave them there and pollute the river.

It’s also the place where we go to beg for life and purify ourselves, but we leave it dirty,” the actress said.

She further asked how people expect help when they disturb their ancestral home.
“We need these places.

We will have to come back again and again, asking that our work go well. But it is we who pollute our homes; Their houses. What are the venue owners supposed to say and do? Let’s change our mentality, please. What we are doing is unacceptable,” she added.
