DJ Maphorisa, one of South Africa’s most popular DJs, was arrested on Monday for allegedly assaulting his girlfriend, Thuli Phongolo, an actress known for her role in the popular TV series “Muvhango”. According to reports, the incident took place at Phongolo’s home in Midrand, Johannesburg, over the weekend. Phongolo filed a case of assault against him, which led to his arrest.

DJ Maphorisa appeared in court on Monday and was granted bail of R4 000. The court ordered him not to contact Phongolo or any other witnesses in the case. This comes as a shock to many of his fans, who have been following him for years.

She said in a statement: “I confronted him so that we can talk about our argument, which happened the previous night during his gig.”

The actress said the acclaimed music producer responded aggressively and started slapping her on the face.

“He held me, took me to the balcony, and grabbed me aggressively by my neck,” Phongolo, who once starred in Generations: The Legacy as Namhla Diale, said.


“We are still trying to gather how she is doing. I am seeing her in the next hour … We just need to actually figure out what is happening … She was with her road manager,” said Phongolo’s manager.

Withdrawal of Assault Case
