Zakes Bantwini’s real name is Zakhele Madida. He was born to Jeffrey Khanyile and Nomthandazo Madida on the 26th of May 1981. Zakes grew up in KwaMashu F-Section in the province of KwaZulu Natal in South Africa. He attended Nqabakazulu high school where he completed his matric. Whilst still in high school, he fathered his first child at the age of 14. Despite this set back, he persevered and managed to make a name for himself.

Education

After high school, he attained a national certificate in Light music at the Durban University of Technology. During his time here, he also formed his record label company, Mayonie records. How went on to study social entrepreneurship at  Gordon institute of Business Science, University of Pretoria. This was after he received a diploma in Jazz and Music performance from the University of KwaZulu Natal.

On his 40th birthday this year, the world learned that Zakes had been accepted into Harvard Business school to study the business of entertainment, music and sport. This revelation came through a post from his wife Nandi Madida wishing him happy birthday in style. Speaking to Drum he says that “I spoke to a friend who studied this course before and it blew my mind because it will help me acquire the necessary skills I need to implement all the plans I have for the next decade and beyond,”

He is very passionate about furthering his education and becoming the Swiss army knife business mogul within the music industry. This drive is what pushes him to keep furthering his studies and learning more on what his industry has to offer.

Musical Career

Zakes Bantwini is a multi talented individual with a knack for all things music related. In 2004 he created Mayonie productions. He went on to release his album his debut album, The good life in 2008 under Mayonie productions. In 2010 he released his second album Love, light and Music. This album produced the smash hits Clap your hands and Wasting my time.

He signed L’vovo Derrango (Thokozani Ndlovu) under Mayonie productions and helped launch his career. They released his self titled album in 2005 and it was nominated for a SAMA award under the best Kwaito Album. Also his album also won best Kwaito and Song of the year awards at the MetroFM awards in 2007.

In 2013 he released his third album, The real book and the fake book; My musical Bible to critical acclaim. It snagged a nomination for the 20th  SAMA awards under best dance album category. In 2017 he released the second album instalment to Love, light and Music in the form of Love, Light and Music 2.

Besides all this, his career has been peppered with a lot of singles and work with various artists. He has worked with Black Coffee, his wife Nandi and the songstress Bucie. This shows his dedication to his craft and his flexibility in work style. At the moment he is focusing on growing his personal music career and also learning the business end of things within music.

Marriage and Love life

Zakes Bantwini married TV personality Nandi Mngoma (now Madida) in 2016. The couple celebrated their 4 year anniversary in 2020. They have 2 children together, a boy named Shaka Madida and a girl named Queen Nefertiti Madida. The couple are very private about their family life and prefer not to be in line light. As a result their socialite status, many speculations surround them.

In 2018 rumours swirled that Zakes was cheating on his wife Nandi. An unknown woman took to Twitter to “expose” his infidelities. The couple remained silent to the media about this speculations for a very long time. Eventually Nandi addressed them in radio interview. She stated that the rumours were untrue and her and Zakes had a really good laugh about it. This shows how strong their bond and marriage truly is.

Besides his children with Nandi, Zakes has 3 other children outside of his marriage. When asked about them he maintains that he has a good relationship with his children especially his daughter. He also adds that his oldest son actually lives down the road from them which facilitates their relationship.

When asked about her husband, Nandi says “I am beyond proud of him, he is truly a reflection of what it means to come from many hardships and still achieve greatness.” Despite many hardships he has managed to overcome and soar to amazing heights. Zakes serves as an inspiration to Africans to show them that we are more than just our circumstances.
