The late 23-year-old University of Fort Hare student Nosicelo Mtebeni has been buried in her home in Khaoue village at Matatiele in the Eastern Cape. The family performed a ritual before the burial

Mtebeni was a final year law student that was brutally killed allegedly by her boyfriend on 17 August. Mourners converged on Khaoue village to bid her farewell.

It was a traumatic and sorrowful moment for the family and friends as the coffin carrying the dismembered body of Nosicelo descended into the grave. A life that tragically perished through the hands of a lover.

It’s a reality of the second pandemic that continues to haunt the fruits of democracy. Women are brutally killed almost every day. Gender-based violence is a threat to life.

Nosicelo Mtebeni funeral:

Speaker after speaker called on government to tighten up strategies to deal with gender-based violence and to include it in the education curriculum.

Meanwhile, Higher Education Minister Dr Blade Nzimande, Labour Minister Thulas Nxesi and Eastern Cape Social Development MEC Siphokazi Mani-Lusithi joined mourners to bid farewell to the slain Fort Hare University law student.

Her body was laid to rest in the early hours of this morning, at her home in Khaoue village in Matatiele. Fellow students are also part of the funeral service of Mtembeni.
