According to reports, the two distinct resignation letters in the City of Tshwane sparked great dispute among the councilors. Members of the EFF stormed the Tshwane council to demand the dissolution of the mayor committee. The EFF asserts that they would only accept the mayor of Tshwane’s resignation letter dated February 13 and that it is illegal to change a resignation date. Speaker of Tshwane Murunwa Makwarela was instructed to seek legal counsel over the two letters. The speaker stated that Wednesday’s special council meeting would shed light on the problem.

TSHWANE SPEAKER SAYS WILLIAMS ACTED LEGALLY

This event has been canceled. According to Makwarela, Williams acted lawfully when he changed his resignation date. This infuriated the EFF, and on Thursday morning, a small group of members began removing personnel associated with the mayor’s office. In a video provided by Benjamin Mathevula on his Twitter page, EFF members are shown in Tshwane officers manhandling a rough; they inform him that he is no longer the MMC and was merely a councilor.

A councillor was assaulted by the EFF in front of the Tshwane Metro Police Department (TMPD) Sipho Stuurman, a Tshwane mayoral office spokesperson, told News24 that the city manager asked the police to remove EFF members. He stated that business was to continue as usual until a new mayor was chosen. “However, the EFF has taken matters into their own hands and acted unlawfully,” Stuurman said News24. While on extraordinary leave, Williams will not serve the remainder of his notice period. The Democratic Alliance (DA) and its coalition partners will determine who will succeed Williams.
