University of Limpopo Students have embarked on an unled revolution demanding off camp allowance after 9 months of non-payment.
This has led to an uprising resulting to setting the institution on fire while destroying infrastructure within the campus.
Off-campus students have had their allowances delayed by a period of over 9 months. They are no longer hoping for solutions from students representatives, as they have taken matters into their own hands.
The events at the University of Limpopo are not new, it has always been in their nature to be extreme once they are ignored for long.
According to the reports from various accounts, the Students of the University of Limpopo who reside off campus have been going through a lot. They have been patient with the management for some time now.
Students at the University of Limpopo Turfloop campus are concerned they will end up homeless because landlords are tired of hearing excuses that the university has not paid them the residential allowances.
The students held an early morning meeting with landlords at zone 1 park in Mankweng today , and tried to discuss a way forward after the university allegedly failed to pay students their off-campus allowances. I
One student told news reporters that it’s been 9 months without receiving his allowance and the university has been promising to pay.
He says he is running out of ideas or people to lend him the rent money
This student says it has been a difficult year for them because they are unable to study peacefully while they are always worried that the landlords will kick them out of their rooms.
She says they have decided they will not be writing their exams until the university pays their allowances because some students end up doing illegal things to be able to pay rent.
The media is just not paying necessary attention to the plight of many students in historically disadvantaged institutions.
The students are demanding that NSFAS officials visit the University of Limpopo finance office ascertain what the students are going through which they described as beyond cruel.
Some also are demanding that SIU visit University of Limpopo to audit everyone working in finance
Currently, Students are disturbed from writing Tests, following a protest. This comes after the university hasn’t settle off-campus allowance for students since the beginning of the year.
The University of Limpopo principal and vice-chancellor Professor Mahlo Mokgalong who gave a mandate to Mankweng police and Mong security company to shoot has not responded to any of our call to hear from the management.
Meanwhile, The University of Limpopo has given students 24 hours to vacate its premises, amid running battles between protesting students and security personnel.
