Borussia Dortmund striker Sébastien Haller has made a return to training for the club as he continues to recover from a bout with testicular cancer.Borussia Dortmund fans received long awaited news this week as Sébastien Haller returned to training for his club after being sidelined in the summer due to his testicular cancer diagnosis. The player has worked hard to get to this pointed, as noted by the club’s Sporting Director, Sebastian Kehl:
The club released photos of Haller and his teammates as well as a short video message from the player himself, which is certainly a good sign in terms of the players progress. Haller seemed very happy to be back with the club in the video, with the player stating that he is “looking forward to see fans in the stadium for some victories”.Haller’s return to the pitch, whenever it happens, will be a momentous victory for both the player and the club. Witnessing any person face such medical adversity and persevere is a moment to cherish.
For Dortmund, the return of Haller may can’t come soon enough. The club have been struggling this season both offensively and defensively. Haller will of course, when ready, hope to help reinforce the former end of Dortmund’s game. While Youssoufa Moukoko has done a good job deputizing in Haller’s absence, the club can’t rely on his talents alone should they wish to push on in the the Bundesliga, DFB Pokal and Champions League.
Moukoko’s contract situation also casts doubt on whether Dortmund can rely on the player in the long term. The negotiations and media speculation could affect Moukoko’s form, and with only Anthony Modeste to rely on should this be the case, Haller’s return will be very much a welcome one as the club will be able to give him incremental minutes and build him up to lead the line as the second half of the season unfolds.
