Here’s what went on in July:

Johannesburg – Fears that illegal miners will start another bloody turf war have spread through Ekurhuleni after seven dead bodies were found in a field on Sunday morning.

A member of the community found the dead bodies, which had bullet holes all over them. When the police arrived, some of the bodies were lying face down in the hot sun and had already started to rot.

They were found on Modderbee Street in Benoni, near a mine dump. The mine dump is in a remote area, and New Modder, the closest town, is about a kilometer away.

Lieutenant-Colonel Lungelo Dlamini, a police spokesman, said it was possible that a rival illegal mining gang killed the men at one of the many abandoned mine shafts in the area. “We don’t know when they were killed, but based on how their bodies look, it could have been a couple of days ago.”

All of them had been shot in the upper body, and the wounds were already starting to swell. Dlamini said, “Our fear is that the people who knew the dead might try to get revenge, which could lead to another bloody turf war.”

The incident has also caused people in Daveyton and New Modder to worry about their safety.

John Kolomane, who takes care of cattle near where the bodies were found, said that the bodies might have been dumped there on Saturday night or early Sunday morning.

My cattle graze here every day. I went by the place where the bodies were found four times on Saturday and Friday, but there was nothing there. And most people don’t walk through this area. Instead, they use the road. When I saw the police there in the morning, I was shocked. I’m starting to worry about my own safety.

” Kolomane said, “I knew zama zamas (illegal miners) worked in this area, but I didn’t know they could be this mean.”

Two men who wanted to look at the bodies to see if one of them was their cousin, who works as an illegal miner, were turned away by the police.
