Students at the Glenvista High School in JHB allegedly set their school hall on fire to avoid writing an exam but the paper still went ahead.
Local councillor Sarah Wissler shared on her Facebook page that the pupils are in grade 10.
Gauteng education MEC Panyaza Lesufi, who on Tuesday visited the school to assess the damage, shared a photograph showing pupils writing the exam outside.
“Yesterday they burnt the school hall because they didn’t want to write an exam. Today they wrote the exam outside. So sad,” he tweeted.
The Gauteng Education Department said learners from the Glenvista High School in Johannesburg allegedly set their school hall on fire on Monday to avoid writing an exam. Despite the chaos, the exam went ahead, only this time, the learners had to write it outdoors.

A video was posted on Tuesday of the Glenvista high school hall on fire but at the time, nothing was confirmed.

“Yesterday [Monday] they burnt the school hall because they didn’t want to write an exam. Today, they wrote the exams outside. So sad.”
Like we said earlier though, those learners still had to write their exam, just in a different setting and pictures have been provided.
A Twitter user responded to Lesufi’s post asking if it was possible to get an accredited contractor who could make the learners fix the Glenvista hall themselves, however, there was no response from Lesufi at the time of publication.
The South African reached out to GDE spokesperson Steve Mabona regarding the damages and how much it amounts to, however, there was no response at the time of publication. The images posted by Lesufi, however, did paint a rather grim picture.
