Police has launched a search following a kidnap of a newborn baby girl in Klerksdorp.
Lieutenant Colonel Amanda Funani, police spokesperson said police are looking for a woman who allegedly kidnapped a week-old baby from her mother on Thursday, 17 June 2021.
The woman speaks Setswana, is 1.65 m tall, and was wearing a black jean and pink top.
“According to information available at this stage, the 17-year-old mother gave birth at her residential place on Monday, 14 June 2021.”
Funani said the newborn baby was subsequently admitted to Klerksdorp Hospital on Thursday morning, 17 June 2021, for a check-up.
She added that the mother and the baby were discharged at 14:00 on the same day.
“The mother was leaving the hospital when she met a woman who offered to buy her tekkies as the young mother was wearing flip-flops on a cold day.”
According to Funani reports suggest that the 17-year-old mother allegedly went to the mall with the woman. The woman had given her money to go and buy tekkies.
“The woman remained behind to look after the newborn baby girl while the young mother went into the shop to buy tekkies.
“The mother discovered when she came out of the shop that the woman was missing with the baby.”
The young mother reported the matter to the police and a case of kidnapping was registered.
