The January transfer window has opened and South African clubs are adding much needed reinforcements to their teams in order to ensure that they have a great second half of the season. PSL clubs are signing players and Supersport United recently announced they have signed a new player. Supersport United have quietly announced the signing of seasoned central midfielder Zukile Kewuti.
The Cape Town born midfielder signs for Gavin Hunt’s team on an initial six month contract until the end of the season. The tall midfielder joins as a free agent as he had his contract with Maritzburg United terminated on 1 January 2023. Supersport United’s head coach Gavin Hunt revealed that when he was offered the player, he sought the advice of his good friend and a former coach of Zukile Kewuti in Benny McCarthy.
Zukile Kewuti’s relationship stems from the time Benny McCarthy was his head coach at Cape Town City. Subsequently, Benny McCarthy signed the lanky midfielder when he joined Amazulu as head coach. The former FC Porto striker recommended Kewuti’s signing to Hunt and added that the midfielder would be loved by Hunt. Zukile Kewuti came through the Cape Town City reserves before being offered a permanent professional contract.
The midfielder stayed at Cape Town City for three years until 2021. During his three year stint in Cape Town, the midfielder had a six month loan spell at Amazulu FC. On 1 July 2021, the midfielder signed for Maritzburg United and played for one season and a half. Kewuti arrived at Maritzburg United as a starter and played 22 games in all competitions.
However, a change of coaches saw a change of fortune in Kewuti’s game time and he was not utilized at all this season.The midfielder is known for his ability to be a box to box midfielder as well as a defensive midfielder. Kewuti can also play as a centre back or left back.
