Violence escalated in the street of Mhluzi as protesters block roads, and attack motorists with sticks and stones in the early hours of Monday.
The unrest started when the Municipal Manager, Adv. Bheki Khenisa, made an announcement that the community meetings in which was supposed to address the hike in tariff was cancelled due to disagreement between the municipal officials and the residents.
Residents living in Extension 7 and 23 could not drive out of the area due to the protest.
The olice officers near Nelson Mandela Drive, major roads were barricaded and taxis and private vehicles could not enter the township.
The unrest started on Monday when municipal officials failed to reach a consensus with residents who attended a community meeting at the Eric Jiyane Hall.
Several community meetings were also scheduled for this week, however, the municipality has postponed them due to the unrest.
