Born Lucas Malong, he dropped out of grade 10 in the most dramatic way in 2017.

“It was a normal school day. I woke up early and chilled with my friends. But then I had a big argument with one of my teachers in class,” Lucasraps recounts.

“It was a computer class and you can’t drink or eat in there. Those were the rules. I was hungry and didn’t eat in the first break. I was just being weird that day.

“We did maths literacy first and then computer studies; it was the same teacher. She caught me eating and kicked me out. She was too upset about it, more than her usual reaction. I made a scene.”

Lucasraps went to the bathroom and as he looked at himself in the mirror, he got an epiphany that this was not supposed to be his journey.

He took off his blazer and threw it in the bin and told his friends he was done with school. They laughed at him. From there he asked the pupils to sign his T-shirt. Many declined.

Later that day the deputy principal had a chat with him, asking if there was trouble at home. Lucasraps explained to him that he didn’t feel academically inclined, especially with the teaching methods used at the school.

After Lucasraps was done explaining his academic troubles, he told the deputy principal about his rap dream before free-styling for him. The deputy principal then signed his T-shirt.

Lucasraps broke the news to his mother when she picked him up from school. His mother was so gobsmacked she kept quiet in the car on the ride back home.

A few weeks earlier, Lucasraps had met Maphorisa in Durban and they started recording the now popular song Ammo. Maphorisa even flew him to Johannesburg to complete recording the song.

Lucasraps lied to Maphorisa and told him that his parents had given him permission to move to Joburg. Maphorisa booked him a one-way plane ticket to Joburg. He packed his bags and later that night told his parents that he was leaving for Joburg in the morning.

“I am blessed to have the parents that I have and they do support me. They raised me well and I’m the gentleman that I am today because of them,” Lucasraps says.

“At first I had to be rebellious for them to understand my music journey. They were just parents and I understand that. I don’t hate them for it.”

After being part of successful songs such as HaiboPardon My FrenchBig Time Sh’lappa and What It Is, his parents have slowly warmed to his music career.

Lucasraps started rapping at eight, but at 16 that’s when he learnt how to put rhymes together and started to write his own lyrics — before he only free-styled.

“I have grown to understand that my network becomes my net worth, and that helped me understand my worth in the music industry.

“That’s something very important for an artist to understand and it helped with the kind of moves that I’ve made.”

Lucasraps has just released his debut single Slide under Def Jam Recordings Africa
