Health Minister Dr Joe Phaahla has called for vigilance as the country records its second Monkeypox case.
The health department said on Tuesday that the second case involved a 32-year old man from Cape Town with no travel history, which suggests a high possibility of local transmission.
The first case was confirmed last week, in a 30-year-old man in Johannesburg who also had no travel history.
“Although Monkeypox is less contagious than smallpox and causes less severe illness… the situation is slowly evolving with cases being recorded,” the department said.
The source and linkage of cases remain under investigation.
