Fourteen people have been arrested by the Hawks in Middelburg Mpumalanga this morning. Among those arrested are the Mayor of the Nkangala District Municipality and two municipal officials, for allegedly defrauding the district municipality.

The suspects are currently being processed and charged by the SAPS, and all are expected to appear in court by the close of business today.

Residents took to the streets where they torched buses and trucks last week. The residents are accusing the municipality of implementing the tariffs without consulting them. They have been protesting since the beginning of last week.

Executive mayor Thembi Masilela was arrested together with her accomplices. She has previously made headlines for being incompetent and always unprepared for her speeches at all times.

According to several report, her arrest doesn’t come as a surprise as there have been suspicious of corruption and fraud by her and some of her co-accused. They will all appear in court for bail application some time this week.
