A Grade 12 learner of the Free State Department of Education has died after drowning in a dam while swimming on Thursday 11, November after an English examination.
Howard Ndaba, the Department spokesperson said eight Grade 12 learners from Olien Secondary School were released on Thursday afternoon after writing an exam.
The learners went swimming in a dam in Fauresmith and unfortunately one of them drowned.
“We are investigating the circumstances which led to this tragic incident,” said Free State Education MEC Dr. Tate Makgoe.
“I am deeply saddened by this loss and would like to heartily convey my condolences to the family, fellow learners, and friends of Dumile Medupe,” added the MEC.
The Department will send counselors to the school to assist the learners and teachers.
Earlier this week, a grade 3 learner from Bloemfontein Oos School died after being struck by lightning while walking home on Monday, 8 November.
Ndaba said the incident took place near her home in the Khayelitsha area of Mangaung Township. The deceased was walking with her fellow learners when tragedy struck.
“We wish to convey our heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, fellow learners, and teachers of the deceased learner. May Her Soul Rest in Peace!” said the Free State Education Department.
