A Former Mamelodi Sundowns prospect was killed in a freak accident in Limpopo on Tuesday 1 March 2022.
Reports revealed that the 21-year-old was struck by lightning during a storm in Seshego, Limpopo. Accounts of the incident allege that Lesiba Ramabula was out walking in a park with a friend when the freak accident occurred.
FORMER SUNDOWNS PLAYER DIES AFTER BEING STRUCK BY LIGHTNING
Limpopo MEC for Social Development Nkakareng Rakgoale has confirmed the death of Ramabula.
“After learning about this tragic incident, we immediately activated a team of social workers who will reach out to the family and start providing psychosocial support services,” Rakgoale said as quoted by FarPost.
“We know that the family is obviously going through a lot, as they lost a young man who is said to be a promising soccer star. Our social workers will also extend the same service to the survivor and other affected parties.
“We express our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and wish his friend a speedy recovery.”
Ramabula had been hopeful of restarting his career in Europe.
A YOUNG MAN CUT DOWN IN HIS PRIME
Turfloop FC technical director Willy Moloto said they were preparing to take Ramabula to Spain in June of this year.
“As South Africa, we lost the next Lucas Radebe because he was so versatile, and he was a leader.
“I went to his family yesterday (Tuesday). His mother called me.
“Even when he was at Sundowns, the mother would ask me about his contracts to find out what’s happening, and she also wanted me to be a mentor to him.
“He was starting to show something after Sundowns released him. I called him to come work with us at Turfloop FC, so we were working so hard to assist him.
“I was also speaking to people in Spain at Malaga to take a look at him. So we were preparing for him to go that side in June.
“We were still in talks, so this is a big loss,” said Moloto.
“He was a very respectful boy. He was hard-working and he was a true leader. I remember we won the under-17 Philly’s Games, and he was the captain, when we were at Molemole Academy. We recruited him in 2014 and at the age of 12, he was captain of the under-17 team. That’s when we won the Philly’s Games tournament. After that tournament, I bought soccer boots for him because of the humbleness and character he was showing.”
