The government of Burundi has just announced that President Pierre Nkurunziza has passed on. According to their report, the 15th President died of Heart Attack, meanwhile, there is a strong indication that he might have died of Corona Virus .
Pierre Nkurunziza is a Burundian politician who has been in power in Burundi since 2005. He was the Chairman of the National Council for the Defense of Democracy-Forces for the Defense of Democracy, the ruling party, until he was elected as President.
On 18th May 2020, Burundi expelled WHO representatives from the country in order to hold an election, which was widely condemned.
His wife is currently in Nairobi where she is fighting for her life from COVID 19.
Pierre Nkurunziza died at the age of 55 years according to the Government. He has ruled for 15 years and has conducted an election, that saw his successor won to continue from where he stopped his anointed successor was just held.
He was admitted to hospital on Saturday after feeling unwell, his condition improved but on Monday he had a cardiac arrest and efforts to revive him were unsuccessful, officials say.
After 15 years in power, Mr Nkurunziza was due to step down in August.
In 2015, the announcement that he would run for a third term plunged the country into chaos. It sparked anger as some questioned the legality of a third-term bid.
There was a failed coup attempt, hundreds of people died in clashes and tens of thousands fled the country.
After a change in the constitution, he was able to run for a further term in last month’s election but he decided to retire and was to be known as the “supreme guide to patriotism”.
Burundi elected a new Evariste Ndayishimiye while he still remained the Paramount leader.
The country remains the only country in Africa that has refused to implement any measure to curb the virus.
