The ANC (African National Congress) hosted an economic dialogue on Friday to discuss solutions to South Africa’s energy crisis. ANC national chairperson Gwede Mantashe emphasized the urgent need to address the crisis, stating that it cannot be ignored any longer. Mantashe pointed out that the energy crisis includes issues of load shedding, baseload, and disregard.
The economic dialogue, titled “Economic Reforms and Energy Security,” included a panel of energy experts, such as former Eskom CEO Jacob Maroga and Professor Sampson Mamphweli. ANC economic transformation subcommittee chairperson Mmamoloko Kubayi also participated in the discussion.
Kubayi described the impact of load shedding on small businesses and the prevalence of gender-based violence during periods of blackouts. She emphasized the importance of restoring energy security in the country. Maroga noted that the energy crisis has damaged public and investor confidence and can only be repaired by stabilizing energy security.
The panel of experts suggested a hybrid approach to energy, utilizing both fossil fuels and renewable sources rather than solely relying on fossil fuels. They advised against rushing into a complete phase-out of fossil fuels such as coal.
Mantashe and Kubayi both stressed the need for the ANC and relevant stakeholders to work together to address the energy crisis. The economic dialogue was held as part of the ANC’s events leading up to their 111th-anniversary celebrations on Sunday.
