A marriage between a top-ranking provincial legislator and his young sweetheart has ended in divorce. The two married couples are now feuding in a bitter divorce that has enraged the media. According to media reports, the legislator is 39 years older than his estranged younger wife, with whom he was married in community of property.

During the divorce proceedings in Johannesburg, the wife claimed half of the estate and appeared to be after his money as well. The couple married in October of 2019 and divorced 11 months later. However, they only spent a fraction of their time together during this period. They also cohabited intermittently prior to their marriage. The legislature was not named in the divorce proceedings due to the nature of the court case.

The wife testified that they met in 2012, while she was a political science student and he was a high-ranking member of the provincial legislature. In 2014, they were engaged and, a few months later, their relationship ended. It is alleged that the young wife was not happy that her husband was still maintaining his former wife and grand children.This resulted in a tense marital dispute between the two lovers. The husband said the age difference between them was one of the problems. He also believed the wife married him to enhance her financial position.

He also added that his wife thought he was rich as he constantly went on overseas trips and occasionally dined at expensive restaurants. But his employer forked the expenses.The court said that having observed the parties when they testified and having considered the content of their testimony, it must agree that the wife was young and impressionable.
