SA rapper AKA has opened up about depression amongst men in the country following Riky Rick‘s death yesterday.

AKA ON PRESSURE MEN CARRY

AKA shared a message of worry following the death and rumoured suicide of Riky Rick on 23 February. The Fela in Versace hitmaker said from the last five people who took their own lives, four were men and mental health is an issue amongst men in South Africa. 

The other one person AKA was probably referring to was his late fiancée Anele “Nelli” Tembe, who plunged to her death from the 10th floor of the Pepperclub Hotel.

“Let’s keep it 100. The last 5 people I know who took their own lives, 4 of them are men. I’ve seen so much suicide over the last year I can’t even feel anything anymore. I’ve spoken to a lot of people, some of them said ‘He just got a bag from African Bank blah blah etc,” he wrote. 

“That tells you everything you need to know about this f***** up, fake a** algorithm world we have created for ourselves to live in. Riky went to Hilton, he grew up around money. I hope that very soon we can address the issue of how damaged and broken the men in this country are. We have no one to talk to, we just pat each other on the back and say, “get on with it, be strong my boi” … but in reality, we are traumatised,” he continued.

The rapper went on to say that men, including himself are crying out for help.

“We are crying out for your help. This is so traumatic. Please, let’s not forget about us. We not perfect by any means but damn …. Look at the stats, we are taking our own lives at record highs. Something has to change. 💜,” he added.

AKA’S BATTLE WITH DEPRESSION 

AKA revealed he was diagnosed with clinical depression following the death of Nelli. He also revealed that he stopped taking his medication because it made him feel numb and his job is to feel.
