28 September 2021 – It is with great sadness that Nedbank announces the passing on of Nedbank Group Chairman Vassi Naidoo on 28 September 2021.
Mpho Makwana, who has been Acting Chairman since Vassi was placed on medical leave of absence on 22 January 2021, said: “Vassi brought a wealth of experience and wisdom to the role of Chairman of the group, and he will be greatly missed by all at Nedbank who knew him. He led with deep integrity and excellence. The Board extends its deepest sympathies to his wife Sheila, daughter Carmeni, and his extended family.”
Mike Brown, Chief Executive, said: “Vassi was a remarkable individual who was held in the highest regard both professionally and personally. As our Chairman, he has made an indelible mark on Nedbank and during his long executive career at Deloitte he had a lasting influence on the lives of many young chartered accountants and the transformation of the accounting profession. We are grateful for his guidance, leadership and wise counsel. He has always been considered a pioneer in his field and he used his position of influence as Nedbank Chairman to bring about positive change and dedicated much of his time to finding ways to improve the lives of every South African including being the catalyst alongside Pravin Gordhan and the late Jabu Mabuza for the CEO Initiative.”
Vassi was appointed to the boards of Nedbank Group Limited and Nedbank Limited as Chairman on 11 May 2015. Vassi was also the Chairman of the WWF Nedbank Green Trust and a member of the Nedbank Group Directors’ Affairs Committee and the Group Related-party Transactions Committee.
Vassi was Chief Executive of Deloitte Southern Africa from 1998 to 2006, a member of the Deloitte UK executive from 2006 to 2009 and a member of the Deloitte Global executive from 2007 to 2011, and thereafter Vice-chair of Deloitte UK from 2009 to 2014. Vassi was a member of the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants, with honorary lifetime membership granted in 2011 for his contribution to the development of the profession in SA. He was also a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales and a Professor of Practice in the Department of Accountancy at the University of Johannesburg.
In terms of Nedbank Group’s Board Continuity Programme, Lead Independent Director, Mpho Makwana, will continue to serve as Acting Chairman and announcements on a permanent Chairman and lead independent director will be made in due course.
Vassi Naidoo Qualification
Vassi Naidoo completed his B Com and Diploma in Accounting at the University of Durban Westville. He joined Deloitte in 1977 and qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 1979. He attended the Programme for Management Development (PMD) at Harvard Business School in 1995.
Vassi has spent all of his working career with Deloitte and was appointed as CEO of Deloitte Southern Africa in 1998 and Chairman of the Africa Board in 2004. He retired from Deloitte in November 2014 having spent 37 years with the firm.
During his tenure at Deloitte he worked in Africa, Europe, Russia, and India, and had the following roles in the Global organization:
- Member of the Global Board of Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu (until 2006)
- Member of the Global Executive of Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu (until 2011)
- Member of the Deloitte UK Executive (from 2006 until 2009)
- Vice Chairman of Deloitte UK (from 2009 until 2014)
He served some of the firm’s largest clients including Barloworld, Transnet, Eskom, First Rand Bank, Anglo American, De Beers, Mondi, Tata, Vedanta, Zee TV, Essar and Econet.
Vassi had extensive business experience in Audit, Corporate Finance, and Mergers & Acquisitions in the Energy, Mining, Telecommunication and Banking Sectors.
Vassi was appointed to the Nedbank Group Limited and Nedbank Limited Boards as a Non-executive Director and Chairman from May 2015. Vassi has been a past Non-executive Director of Old Mutual Plc, Old Mutual Group Holdings and Old Mutual Limited. Vassi was appointed as a Senior Independent Director of Liquid Telecommunications Holdings Limited on 1 November 2016 which is based in Mauritius and Chairman of Gateway Delta in 2017, also based in Mauritius. Vassi was also appointed as a Non-executive Director and Deputy Chairman of Black Mountain Mining (Pty) Limited/Vedanta Zinc International from 4 May 2020.
Vassi is a Chartered Director, CD(SA) and a member of the IOD(SA). He is a member of ICAEW and SAICA and was conferred honorary life membership of SAICA in 2011 for his contribution to the development of the profession in South Africa. He is also a Professor of Practice in the Department of Accountancy at the University of Johannesburg.
Vassi was past Chairman of the Africa Children Feeding Scheme, past Trustee of the Thuthuka Bursary Scheme and chaired The WWF Nedbank Green Trust funded by Nedbank.
