A Manenberg man has died after being shot while skarreling for old clothes and recyclables in Tambo Village.
Shocked residents gathered at a canal in Tambo Village on Tuesday morning where the lifeless body of Eben Florence, 35, was found after he had allegedly been shot and dumped in the canal during the night.
His hartseer family says they could not believe their eyes when they were called to the scene just metres from his mother’s home.
His 44-year-old sister, who asked not to be named, says they are devastated and confused by his death.
“Eben didn’t work and all he did was skarrel the whole day for second-hand clothes, cans and bottles so he could make a living and look after my mother who is 73 years old,” she says.
“On Monday afternoon he left home and went to skarrel and she didn’t see him.
“On Tuesday morning, the neighbours heard skote but we are so used to skote and we didn’t know someone was shot.
“In the morning, someone came running to tell my mother it was Eben who was shot and dumped in the canal.”
Police spokesperson Colonel André Traut confirms the incident and says the matter is being investigated, with no arrests as yet.
Eben’s family discussed their concerns yesterday about the manner in which he was killed.
“We are very confused.
“We don’t know why they would shoot him because he walked all over Manenberg day and night.
“I always told him they’re shooting, he must go home but he always said he is not a gangster so he didn’t feel that he would be targeted,” says his sister.
