Prince Kaybee under serious fire for ‘defending’ Toxic Masculinity

SA House DJ, Prince Kaybee is under serious attacks over his support for toxic masculinity, especially at the time, the killing of women and Gender-based violence targeted at women is on a rise in South Africa.

This is happening, a day after the Police minister reported that over 10, 000 rape cases were recorded between April and June in South Africa.

Again, there is an ongoing demand for justice #JusticeForNosicelo over Nosicelo’s Boyfriend killing of a young woman and her body parts were dismembered.

The tweet attracted a lot of anger and rage, due to the time, and how he worded it.

A lot of people feel that it is unwise, and insensitive to push this narrative in the promotion of toxic masculinity Among South African men who already have a very high record of Gender-Based violence.

Kabelo made a strong case on why men should not reduce their masculinity for any reason, citing that it is needed to thrive, protect oneself, loved ones and become successful.

“Gents, there’s nothing toxic about being masculine. You need that trait as a man to thrive, protect yourself, your loved ones and be successful. No one must ever tell you to tone it down so that you appear equal”

Barely 4 hours after his initial tweet, he returned for clarification, where he maintained that he’s not a rapist, no an abuser, but has been in the forefront in advocating for women in South Africa.

He went further to equate the struggle of men and women, saying both genders participate actively in killing, raping, abusing and molesting each other but maintained his initial support for masculinity which he describes as a component of being a man that is needed to protect women.

“I’m not a rapist or an abuser, in fact, I think I have OPENLY advocated for women more than any other Dj in SA. There are men and women that kill, rape, abuse and molest, MEN AND WOMEN. Masculinity is a component of being a man, we need strong men to protect women.”

His hot takes didn’t go down with many, as they have camped in his mention with divergent views on the subject.

What exactly is Masculinity and Toxic Masculinity?

From an ordinary definition, Masculinity means you have to be assertive, tough, emotionally strong as well don’t, and not easily shaken in a lot of situations.

The concept of toxic masculinity is used in academic and media discussions of masculinity to refer to certain cultural norms that are associated with harm to society and men themselves.

Traditional stereotypes of men as socially dominant, along with related traits such as misogyny and homophobia, can be considered “toxic” due in part to their promotion of violence, including sexual assault and domestic violence.

The socialization of boys in patriarchal societies often normalizes violence, such as in the saying “boys will be boys” about bullying and aggression.

According to a study in the Journal of School of Psychology

Psychology uses the following definition to explain toxic masculinity: “the constellation of socially regressive [masculine] traits that serve to foster domination, the devaluation of women, homophobia, and wanton violence.”

In modern society, people often use the term toxic masculinity to describe exaggerated masculine traits that many cultures have widely accepted or glorified.

Check out what people are saying about him.

“Awuyisebenzisi ke wena ingqondo. Just stick to being a cheater and leave these topics to people that can actually think. What is this?”

@Zimkhitha_

“You’ll have to admit that there’s a toxic form of masculinity that makes men view women as objects and makes them treat them this way too. It enforces hypersexuality on young boys too. You can’t cancel it out and say masculinity is not toxic as if that fixes it all.”

@Molebo_Centia_T

“exhibit A as to why society needs to stop expecting celebrities to be smart”

@icycherie

“Here’s a SAn man spreading false narratives on his platform in a time where women are saying toxic masculinities are killing and raping us, this DJ comes to its defence.
This is the calibre of the men in this country. Someone’s boyfriend. The bar is low @PrinceKaybee_SA”

@YoliShade

However, we also have others who are strongly in support of his position.

“Facts. Masculinity isn’t toxic. However, there are toxic behaviours that can be found in some masculine males. But the same can be said about femininity, it also has toxic traits here and there but somehow ‘toxic femininity is not a thing.”

@Zuks_Da_Prins

“Facts!
Kaybee is a Fax machine 🤭”

@RealTrigger101

“He didn’t lie. There’s nothing wrong with masculinity, the problem is when it starts becoming toxic”
