Sixth Child Dies in Soweto After Suspected Food Poisoning

The sixth child involved in the suspected food poisoning incident in Naledi, Soweto, has sadly passed away.

Seven-year-old Katleho Olifant had been hospitalized in the ICU for a week following the consumption of snacks, allegedly containing toxins, from a local spaza shop.

His death occurred on October 13, 2024, the same day a mass funeral was held for the five other children who had died earlier from the incident.

The children reportedly fell ill after consuming a snack brand called “Brown Dash.” In response to the tragedy, the community has expressed outrage, leading to the shutdown of several spaza shops in the area.

An investigation is ongoing to determine the exact cause of the deaths, with authorities looking into potential food contamination.
