Puebla International Literature Festival Rescinds South Africa’s Country-in-Focus Designation

In a powerful stance against injustice, bullying and Xenophobia, the Puebla International Literature Festival has revoked South Africa’s designation as the Country-in-Focus for this year’s festival.

The decision comes after the victimization of Chidimma Adetshina, her family, and members of immigrant communities in South Africa.

Festival Director Ikenna Okeh announced the rescinding of South Africa’s invitation, citing the country’s failure to uphold the principles of justice, equality, and human dignity. The statement condemned the “climate of mob rule” that has enabled the persecution of Adetshina and others, undermining the values that literature seeks to promote.

This bold move sends a strong message that cultural recognition cannot be divorced from ethical responsibility. The festival stands in solidarity with those fighting for justice and will continue to support South African writers, while advocating for positive change.

The Puebla International Literature Festival aims to celebrate diverse voices, cultures, and ideas, positioning itself as a beacon for literature’s power to challenge the status quo. However, the current state of affairs in South Africa contradicts the values the festival holds dear.

The decision is not a rejection of South Africa’s rich literary heritage or its courageous writers, poets, and artists. Instead, it’s a statement against the injustices that have been gathering momentum since the Miss South Africa beauty pageantry.

The festival invites the global literary community to join in reflecting on literature’s role in confronting today’s challenges. By taking a stand against injustice, the Puebla International Literature Festival demonstrates its commitment to fostering dialogue, understanding, and solidarity among nations.

In a world where literature has the power to give voice to the voiceless, the festival’s decision serves as a reminder that words have consequences, and actions have repercussions. By rescinding South Africa’s designation, the Puebla International Literature Festival upholds the values of justice, equality, and human dignity, sending a powerful message that will resonate across the globe.
