Kenny “Sushi King” Kunene, deputy president of the Patriotic Alliance and well-known for eating sushi off the semi-naked bodies of supermodels, has accomplished what many may have thought was nearly impossible: he has become one of the most significant figures in the affairs of the enormous Johannesburg Metropolitan.

Speculation surfaced on Thursday that Kunene was set to be appointed as the MMC for Transport by newly-elected Joburg Mayor Thapelo Amad.Meanwhile, that seems to have gone beyond just being a speculation, as Kunene has this morning confirmed via his Twitter account, that he has been sworn in as a member of the Johannesburg City council.

In the shared video, Kunene can be heard swearing an oath that he will certainly be faithful and will uphold the constitution while discharging his duties as the member of the Joburg Metro council

Kunene’s path to the Mayoral Committee was facilitated by the PA’s horse trading with other parties including the ANC, wherein they formed a bloc to oust the DA-led coalition a couple of weeks ago.It will be interesting to see whether Kunene will be able to rid himself off the stain of being an ex-convict, and a ‘king of bling’ in order to discharge his responsibilities with impeccable record.

Some people have already labelled the new coalition as a monumental joke, which is constituted by people who will be hell-bent on collapsing the finances of the City, whose yearly budget is in the tune of R78 billion.

Johannesburg residents have seen the City exchange hands quite a number of times over the past five years, due, of course, to the volatile and tumultous nature of coalition arrengements.Therefore, they would be hoping and counting on people like Kunene to deliver the services and make Joburg a World class city it once were.What do you make of Kunene forming part of the Johannesburg exco?
