South Africa being a country where the majority of the citizens are of African descent, it is still a country that experiences racism, especially from the minority, such as racist white individuals, but also assists individuals from other race groups that are not white. And it seems like it’ll come at the end of every single year because every single year there is an individual who gets publicly exposed or an institution that gets publicly exposed for being discriminatory and racist towards African individuals.
And this is something that shows that racism in South Africa is still something that might not end anytime soon because there are individuals who live amongst South African society with other individuals that are racist and have racist thoughts, and they only get exposed when they cannot hide it anymore. And knowing that the country has a long history of violent crimes and a government that operated on racist laws, there are still individuals today who implement those laws. The Spar Group has been accused of racism.
The Spar Group has retail shops all over South Africa that sell groceries. It is said that the SOAR group prioritises white retailers over black retailers, forcing them out of business with no income. And not only are they said to be racist, but they are also accused of intimidation and harassment to avoid reaching settlement agreements with them; more than 10 franchises around Gauteng have been affected by this and forced to shut down before being handed over to white retailers.
Black retailers have also said that Spar has not offered them the same support as it does to white retailers, and they also allegedly wanted to use BEE loans to bail out the white retailers. And the soar group also sells retail stores that were already making a loss to black retailers. And white retailers are treated differently; they don’t have to pay, but black retailers will have to pay.
