SA DJ Black Coffee becomes first African DJ to win Grammys award

The 64th annual Grammy awards, screened in the early hours of Monday morning on 4 April 2022, saw South African DJ, Black Coffee – whose real name is Nkosinathi Maphumulo – make history by becoming the first African DJ to win a Grammy award.

Nkosinathi Innocent Sizwe Maphumulo, better known by his stage name Black Coffee, is a South African DJ, record producer and songwriter. 

The Drive hit-maker won in the category Best Dance/Electronic Album for his seventh studio album, Subconsciously, which was released in 2021 and features Pharrell Williams, David Guetta and Msaki, among other artists.

During his acceptance speech, Black Coffee – who took to the stage alongside his eldest son Esona – revealed how he wants his music to heal people.

“I want to thank God for the gift of music and being able to share it with the world and heal souls and help people go through whatever they’re going through in life,” he said before thanking his fans and his children.

“I want to thank my fans all over the world and people who follow what I do, thank you so much for believing in me. I want to thank my family and my children.”

Other winners for the night included Jazmine Sullivan who walked away with the Best R&B Album and top nominated artist Jon Batiste who walked away with five Grammys, including the Album of the Year award.
