Orlando Pirates have confirmed that midfielder Nkanyiso Zungu has been suspended by the club after being charged by police on Sunday evening.
Zungu has been missing in action for the Buccaneers in 2022 and on Sunday evening, the club confirmed rather shocking news.
Pirates said in a statement that the 26-year-old was suspended pending an investigation, but did not elaborate on his transgression.
ORLANDO PIRATES STAR ‘CHARGED’ AND ‘SUSPENDED’
The club issued a statement regarding Zungu’s matter, suspending the player until further notice.
“Orlando Pirates Football Club can confirm that midfielder Nkanyiso Zungu has been charged at the Moffatview Police Station this evening,” a Pirates statement read.
“The club suspends Mr Zungu pending an investigation. As this matter is currently in the hands of the authorities, the club is unable to make further comment until this process is complete.”
Orlando Pirates didn’t specify why Zungu was arrested, and attempts to get further comment from Orlando Pirates’ media officer Thandi Merafe were unsuccessful on Sunday evening.
Zungu has hardly featured for Pirates this season, having made just one appearance in the DStv Premiership. The last time he made the matchday squad was in August last year, starting in a 0-0 draw with Marumo Gallants.
In total, Zungu has made 47 top flight appearances while scoring just once and assisting one further goal at the age of 26.
Pirates, meanwhile, defeated Royal Leopards 3-0 in a CAF Confederation Cup clash at the Orlando Stadium on Sunday.
They subsequently secured top spot in Group B with nine points from four games.
